About Karl Strauss Brewing Company
Karl Strauss Brewing Company is based in San Diego, California. Founded on February 2, 1989, by Master Brewer Karl Strauss (born 1912 in Minden, Germany), his cousin Chris Cramer, and Matt Rattner, the trio opened the first brewpub in downtown San Diego, launching the city's craft beer industry after a post-Prohibition void. The company remains independently owned. The company operates a main production brewery in Pacific Beach, San Diego, and multiple brewpubs across Southern California. It brews a range of craft beers including flagship brands such as Red Trolley Ale, Tower X, Follow the Sun, and Boat Shoes. Through Karl Strauss Distributing, the company also provides distribution services for other independent beverage producers. No specific facility size, headcount, or annual volume figures are disclosed. Karl Strauss serves the craft beer market directly through its brewpubs and retail distribution, and supports fellow independent beverage producers via its distribution arm. Its beers are distributed to retailers, bars, and restaurants throughout Southern California. The company also hosts private events and parties at its brewpub locations. The founders aimed to bring local, handcrafted beer back to San Diego, inspired by brewpubs encountered abroad. The company highlights its pioneering role in San Diego's craft beer scene, 128 major competition medals won since 2009, and a culture centered on growth, collaboration, and passion for craft beer.
