About Alabama Woodworkers Guild, Inc.
The Alabama Woodworkers Guild, Inc. was founded in 1983 by a group of woodworkers in Shelby County, Alabama. The organization incorporated in November 2004 and received 501(c)(3) charitable status in February 2005. Its Woodworking Education Center (WEC) is housed in the former Maylene School building on Highway 17 in Maylene, where the guild moved in 2007 and held a grand opening in May 2008. The guild operates the WEC as a shared workshop equipped with professional-grade machinery not typically found in home shops, including a Bridgewood 12-inch jointer, a SawStop table saw, a Grizzly 20-inch planer, and a Bosch 12-inch compound sliding miter saw. The facility is open Friday through Sunday for members and visitors when a supervisor is on duty. The guild holds general membership meetings on the third Saturday of each month from January through November, featuring presentations, show-and-tell sessions, and mentorship time. Additional activities include CNC/laser group meetings, hand-tool sessions, luthier and toy-building groups, seminars with professional woodworkers, an annual juried show, shop tours, and a monthly newsletter. Membership is open to anyone aged 13 or older with an interest in woodworking, regardless of tool ownership or experience level. The guild serves hobbyists, beginners, and master craftsmen alike, and its toy-building program donates finished pieces to children’s hospitals and other agencies. Visitors are welcome at meetings and at the WEC during supervised hours. The guild’s stated mission is to promote and administer programs that benefit the woodworking community and advance the art and craft of woodworking. It was started to provide a forum for woodworkers to share skills, access specialized equipment, and fellowship with peers.
